BSMA Launches Industry Action Agenda to Strengthen the Molecular Diagnostics Supply Chain

Inaugural MDx Steering Committee identifies critical vulnerabilities, establishes priorities for industry collaboration, and invites diagnostic companies, laboratories and suppliers to join the initiative.

Calabasas, California — August 28, 2026 — The Bio Supply Management Alliance (BSMA) announced today that its newly established Molecular Diagnostics (MDx) Supply Chain Steering Committee has completed its inaugural meeting and established an initial game plan to address some of the most pressing supply chain challenges confronting the rapidly expanding molecular diagnostics industry. The Steering Committee, chaired by Jerome Van Crayelynghe, was created to bring together diagnostic companies, clinical and reference laboratories, suppliers, technology providers and supply chain professionals on a neutral, non-competitive platform where systemic industry challenges can be addressed collectively.

The Committee concluded that while extraordinary advances in genomics, precision medicine, oncology, infectious disease surveillance and personalized medicine are transforming molecular diagnostics, the supporting supply chain infrastructure has not always advanced at the same pace. Critical materials such as primers, probes, enzymes, extraction chemistries, specialty plastics, reagents and sequencing consumables frequently depend upon concentrated supplier ecosystems. At the same time, MDx companies must manage volatile demand, rapidly evolving technologies, complex regulatory requirements, specialized laboratory operations and increasingly global supply networks. These are not simply individual company problems. They are industry problems — and many lend themselves to industry solutions.

From Discussion to Action

At its inaugural meeting on August 20, 2026, the Steering Committee identified seven major challenges confronting the MDx supply chain:

  • Single-source raw material fragility
  • Capacity and manufacturing scale-up constraints
  • Cold and controlled-temperature logistics and labeling vulnerabilities
  • Regulatory fragmentation and reimbursement complexity
  • Inventory obsolescence and demand volatility
  • Data and interoperability gaps
  • Talent and operational skill shortages

Rather than attempting to address every challenge simultaneously, the Committee agreed to select two or three high-impact problems for focused action at its October meeting, with the objective of developing practical initiatives that can benefit participating organizations and ultimately strengthen the broader MDx ecosystem.

A Game Plan for Non-Competitive Industry Collaboration

The Steering Committee identified several areas where collaboration could produce significant benefits without compromising the competitive interests of participating organizations. Among the opportunities to be explored are shared supplier auditing and qualification frameworks, improved quality control across critical inputs and manufacturing components, calibration and maintenance standards for laboratory instruments, diversification of supply sources, consortium-based procurement, labeling harmonization, supply chain resilience practices, regulatory compliance best practices and workforce development.

One particularly important opportunity is supplier qualification. MDx organizations often expend considerable resources independently auditing and qualifying many of the same suppliers. Developing common frameworks, standards and best practices could reduce duplication while improving quality and resilience throughout the industry. Similarly, excessive dependence on single-source suppliers for critical reagents, raw materials, consumables and components represents a systemic vulnerability. The Committee will explore how greater supplier visibility, alternative-source qualification and collaborative approaches can strengthen continuity of supply.

Building the MDx Supply Chain Community

The immediate priority of the Steering Committee is to broaden participation throughout the molecular diagnostics ecosystem. Members will engage additional MDx manufacturers, diagnostic companies, laboratories, suppliers and technology providers and help define the value proposition for bringing these organizations together through BSMA. The Committee will also initiate focused industry conversations to determine where collaboration and standardization can generate measurable benefits.

Organizations such as Illumina, Guardant Health, Twist Bioscience and other leaders across the MDx ecosystem represent the types of companies whose knowledge and participation can contribute significantly to this industry dialogue. BSMA believes that meaningful progress will require participation across the entire value chain — from suppliers of critical raw materials, reagents and genomic technologies through diagnostic manufacturers and laboratories to logistics, regulatory and technology partners.

Why Collaboration Is Needed Now

The urgency is clear. Supply chains remain concentrated. Many critical MDx materials and components have limited qualified sources. Scientific innovation is outpacing operational maturity. Rapid product innovation has created new requirements for supplier management, manufacturing scalability, inventory planning and quality systems. Regulatory expectations are increasing. Traceability, documentation, quality and compliance requirements increasingly intersect directly with supply chain operations.

Demand remains inherently volatile. Emerging diseases, public-health events, oncology growth and decentralized testing can create dramatic changes in demand. Specialized talent is scarce. The industry needs professionals who understand the intersection of molecular diagnostics, laboratory operations, quality, regulatory requirements and supply chain management. These challenges cross organizational boundaries. BSMA believes that the industry can address them more effectively by creating a trusted forum where companies can learn from one another, establish best practices, identify opportunities for standardization and collectively strengthen the resilience of the MDx supply chain.

BSMA invites professionals from molecular diagnostic companies, clinical and reference laboratories, reagent and raw-material suppliers, genomic technology companies, instrument manufacturers, logistics providers, regulatory specialists and supply chain organizations to participate in this initiative.
